This week's Featured Employee is Vani, one of our Project Managers. For the last year, Vani has been managing one of Guidance’s largest design projects – the new website for the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP). She spends most of her time on site at LADWP’s Downtown L.A. offices, so we paid her a visit to see what she was up to. We asked Vani to answer a few questions for us, here's what she said:
What’s your title?
How long have you been at Guidance?
Just a little over 1 year. I joined in December 2009.
Tell us about your hometown.
Albertson, New York - which consists of maybe 10 streets. It may sound like a small town, but apparently we have 5,200 people living there (thank you, Wikipedia!). It’s located on Long Island and only a short 30-minute train ride into the city.
What city do you currently live in?
Palms - West Los Angeles, and absolutely loving it! I can walk and complete all of my errands for the week in 70 degree weather.
How did you decide on this career?
I graduated with an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and was all set to find a techie job in a lab environment. When I graduated, the job market was not doing too well and I had limited choices. I ended up joining a consulting firm as an analyst and there was no looking back. I guess things happen for a reason because I definitely wouldn’t have been happy confined in a lab! I’ve had some amazing experiences with a variety of clients. “Variety is the spice of life” and that’s what keeps me going on the job.
What was the oddest job you ever held?
One of my first jobs as a consultant was travelling to various postal facilities throughout the country (at extremely odd hours) and conducting training on new handheld devices. Let’s just say that some of the employees were not too happy about the change in process we were introducing (and in turn with me being there). It was a very challenging experience to face alone fresh out of college. I also never thought I would learn so much about the postal system and am very appreciative now for each piece of mail that gets to my mailbox!
What do you like most about working at Guidance?
The energy and creative spunk of all the employees; in fact, I think that’s a requirement to work here and is what motivates everyone on a daily basis. Everyone is always willing to help you and work-life balance is also highly valued.
