Meet Colin -- This Week's Featured Employee

March 4, 2011

This week’s featured employee is Colin, one of our Project Managers. Colin recently joined Guidance and has been doing a great job juggling new responsibilities both at work and at home – he and his wife Carrie just welcomed their second son! We asked Colin to answer a few questions for us, here's what he said:

What’s your title?
Senior Project Manager

How long have you been at Guidance?
I started on December 20, 2010. It’s been about two and a half months

Tell us about your hometown.
I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. My dad had a job that required him to move a lot, so early on I lived in St Louis, MO, Manchester, MO, New Orleans, LA, Santa Cruz, CA and Salem, OR. We stopped moving when I was in the 5th grade, and from that point on I lived in Stockton, CA. That is what I consider my hometown. Stockton is a mid-sized city in California’s Central Valley. As a city, it gets a lot of bad press, but I liked it. It’s a short drive to Lake Tahoe and a bunch of ski mountains, so I did a lot of skiing growing up.

What city do you currently live in?
Redondo Beach. I moved to the South Bay after college and lived in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, and now I have owned my place in Redondo Beach for over 10 years.

How did you decide on this career?
I was an Aerospace Engineering student in college. After 4 years of studying engineering, I decided I didn’t really want to do that as a career. A friend of mine who graduated a year earlier started working at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). He convinced me that a consulting company was a good place to be challenged and learn about all different aspects of business and technology. I got a job at Andersen out of college, and gravitated towards technology solutions while I was there. After a few years, I left for a smaller firm that focused even more on technical architecture and solution design. I have had roles on projects as a developer, technical architect, business analyst, project manager, QA lead, and more. I have always had an interest in project methodology and delivering the right solution to a client as efficiently as possible. I just love it when the project’s processes come together with the right technical solution and a talented team to deliver a solution that makes the client successful!

What was the oddest job you ever held?
I have had jobs as a paper boy, restaurant dish washer, lifeguard, swimming instructor, swim coach, and travel agent. But my oddest job was working as a research assistant to a PhD student in Engineering. We were using a very powerful laser to vaporize sand. I helped design some of the testing equipment and also helped run the tests. The laser was so powerful that it had to be used 2 stories underground in a fireproof room. It was powerful enough to burn through a cinderblock. Running tests required careful alignment of the laser beam using a series of mirrors. If it wasn’t aligned right, it could be deadly. So I was always a little nervous whenever I turned it on…

What do you like most about working at Guidance?
I have been super impressed with the quality of the people working here. Guidance has employees and contractors who are super smart, go out of their way to work as a team, all without any pretentiousness. Great environment to work in.
