Meet Roshan -- This Week's Featured Employee

April 8, 2011

This week's Featured Employee is Roshan, part of our team of ColdFusion developers behind the sites for the world’s largest retailer of athletic footwear and apparel. With both a toddler and a baby, Roshan balances his time between work, family and his great passion for sports. We asked Roshan to answer a few questions for us, here's what he said:

What’s your title?
Senior Associate.

How long have you been at Guidance?
1 year and 10 months

Tell us about your hometown.
I was born and raised in Kochi (formerly known as Cochin), a vibrant city situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula, in the beautiful state of Kerala, hailed as “God’s Own Country.” Kochi is the commercial capital of Kerala, and its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet “The Queen of Arabian Sea”. The city’s major attractions are its cosmopolitan outlook, friendly people and enjoyable weather. The temperature ranges from 70 to 90 degree Fahrenheit, with no extreme weather conditions.

What city do you currently live in?
Playa Vista, California

How did you decide on this career?
I loved computers, ever since I’ve known about them. There was a computer institute back in my hometown where I used to spend hours learning and doing lab works. One day, the principal challenged our batch to write a program in Borland C++ that would solve a “Tower of Hanoi” puzzle. In a couple of days, I was able to complete the program which asked for the number of discs to play and the number of seconds of delay between moves, and would do a graphic representation that solved the puzzle (of course using characters to form different sized rectangles to represent the discs). I was the only one to finish the project by that time period. The principal was so impressed with the result that he demonstrated it to the whole class and awarded me with a surprise gift. That was the beginning of my programming career.

What was the oddest job you ever held?
The computer institute (where I learned all the basics) had a tradition of hiring the toppers as instructors and I was fortunate (or unfortunate) to become one. So I had this interesting (can’t say odd) part-time job for several months, to teach people who joined the institute to take short-term courses. There was a wide-range of students in each class, including college kids, bank officials, priests, housewives etc. It was a great experience overall, especially when they provided good feedback about the class. I’ll never forget a question a girl asked from the younger batch. Luckily, that topic was not in the syllabus and I never had to answer her question (ask me, if you want to know what her question was).

What do you like most about working at Guidance?
The smart people working here and the location.

What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on adding security enhancements to the account management functionality on one of our client’s websites.
