Meet Muliadi -- This Week's Featured Employee

January 14, 2011

This week's Featured Employee is Muliadi, our resident gadget expert. If you are ever in the market for new electronics (especially computers, cell phones and cameras), ask Muliadi for recommendations – he’ll most likely be two models ahead whatever you’re looking to buy!! Muliadi worked from Guidance’s headquarters in Marina del Rey, CA for almost 4 years, but now he telecommutes all the way from beautiful Bali, Indonesia. We asked Muliadi to answer a few questions for us, here's what he said:

What’s your title?
I am a Managing Director

How long have you been at Guidance?
As a Guidance employee, 4.5 years, but I worked with Guidance for the first time over 10 years ago on the eNutrition project.

Tell us about your hometown.
Since I traveled a lot during my childhood years, there are many places I could call my hometown, but the two I hold dear to my heart are Surabaya (Indonesia) and Hong Kong (administrative region of China). Surabaya is where most of my family members still live. It is the second largest city in Indonesia (after the capital city of Jakarta) and it is located on the northern shore of eastern Java island. It is also known as the city of heroes, where one of the most important battles of the Indonesian National Revolution (1945) took place, protecting Indonesia’s independence from the Dutch. To me, it is a city where the food is both cheap and great! :-) Then there’s Hong Kong, where I went to school during my early childhood years. I love Hong Kong and living there was one of the most important chapters of my life.

What city do you currently live in?
Nowadays, I live in the beautiful Indonesian island of Bali. It is interesting how people from around the world know more about this island than the country it belongs to! :)

How did you decide on this career?
I think I owe my career to the influence that my college roommate - and shall I call mentor – played on me. I was an Accounting major in college with plans to do a double major in International Finance. Believe it or not, I still love the financial and accounting subjects to this day! But after my roommate taught me how to build and repair my computer and how to surf the Internet, things changed. I remember getting really excited about being online with both Prodigy and AOL. As interest grew in Information Systems (both hardware and software), I decided to switch my major from Accounting to Computer Science, but since I had already taken almost all the business courses required for my Accounting degree, I switched to Management of Information Systems instead, which was good enough for me. I greatly enjoyed all the courses I took on System Analysis and Database Programming, which really helped shape my career today.

What was the oddest job you ever held?
Luckily, I’ve never had an odd job. However, my first job after graduating from college was as part of a "two-man" (my manager and I) IT department for a long distance company, and while it wasn’t odd, it wasn’t typical either. My job duties included doing programming and database admin, running and fixing phone and data cables, and answering my boss’s house calls for IT support – my manager and I had to drive all the way to his house in Laguna Niguel to fix his personal computer issues! It was a fun job, though, and I learned a lot while I worked there. :-)

What do you like most about working at Guidance?
To me, the number one reason is that it allows me to keep a balance between my personal and work life. The fact that Guidance lets me work remotely from Bali so I can stay closer to my aging parents is really unheard of when you think of work arrangements other companies are willing (or not) to make. I will be forever grateful to both Jason and Jon (Guidance’s CEO & CTO) for letting me do so.

I also think the people at Guidance are truly amazing!! And last but not least, with Guidance, I have the opportunity to learn every facet of the business – from project management, to technical architecture and business development. That is a rare opportunity.

What are you working on?
I spend most of my time helping the Business Development team with Technical Sales, but I am also the Project Manager on 4 of Guidance’s ongoing acccounts.

Here’s a photo of Muliadi!
Since we couldn’t fly out to Bali in time to record Muliadi’s video for today’s column, we chose instead to show this picture of him in a beautiful garden at the Goa Gajah sanctuary in Bali.
