Meet Lisa -- This Week's Featured Employee

February 18, 2011

This week's Featured Employee is Lisa, who heads our Finance and Human Resources teams. Originally from the Garden State, Lisa's can-do attitude and dedication are truly the heart of Guidance. We asked Lisa to answer a few questions for us, here's what she said:

What’s your title?
Vice President, Finance & Human Resources

How long have you been at Guidance?
Two and a half years, since September 2008

Tell us about your hometown.
I grew up in Springfield, New Jersey. It’s only 30 minutes from New York City, but when I was growing up there was a lot of farm land. My grandparents sold Christmas trees in the winter and seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables the rest of the year. I grew up picking tomatoes and strawberries and have decorated and sold quite a few Christmas wreaths. We never had a nice Christmas tree because my father always sold the one we picked out - we were left with the worst tree on the lot - but my mom managed to make it look great. I have a lot of fond memories growing up there.

What city do you currently live in?
Hermosa Beach. After moving here from the East Coast, I feel like I am permanently on vacation. We live a block from the beach and take advantage of it as much as possible. It’s not uncommon for my family to walk down there at least once a weekend, even in the winter. We appreciate it all the more this year, as the East Coast is pounded by multiple snow storms. Hopefully, I can get some of my extended family to see the light and move here.

How did you decide on this career?
Senior year in high school, I had a take home final exam in my Accounting class. It was supposed to take four weeks -- I finished it in four days. I have always loved numbers. When my Accounting teacher in college suggested it, I jumped at the chance and never looked back. There were only 40 students with Accounting majors at my college, and the curriculum was pretty rigorous. It was like boot camp; we were a tight-knit group and I still keep in touch with a lot of them.

What was the oddest job you ever held?
I never really had an odd job, but I used to work as Production Auditor for the Walt Disney Studios. Part of my job was to go to movie sets and take inventory of the various props and wardrobe items that were in use. I got to meet different celebrities (some A-listers) and hear all about the gossip and their crazy demands. It was definitely a fun job and I got to travel all over the world, but once you go behind the scenes you lose some of that “movie magic”. I will never look at movie stars the same way again.

What do you like most about working at Guidance?
I don’t know if I can pick one, but I can narrow it down to two. The first is the people. Everyone is highly motivated, but laid back at the same time. There are no large egos here, everyone pitches in and does their part to get the job done. The second is the opportunity to apply the knowledge I have learned working in larger companies. Guidance has some great things on the agenda this year, and I look forward to helping the company achieve their goals and watch it grow.
